Thunder - Starring Lon Chaney (Hardback) (9781593934248)

THIS IS THE HARDBACK EDITION. Thunder was the last silent film for Lon Chaney. His health was not good during the shoot and for the first time in his career he held up production while he recuperated. He plays Grumpy Anderson, a near retirement, old workhorse of a train engineer. It is said that a piece of artificial snow, used in the production, lodged in his throat causing an infection that led to his untimely death at age 47 on August 26, 1930. Only a few fragments exist. The novel was published in 1930 in France and has been translated by Eric McNaughton. "The 1929 audiences were up on their feet and cheering Chaney at the exciting climax of Thunder." - Chauncey Haines - Silent Film Organist

Privilege, Liberalism, and Race- Experiences of People of Color Living in a Predominantly White Community (9783836421218)

Across the nation, university initiatives indicate an active interest in increasing racial diversity on college campuses, and in their surrounding communities. However, the number of People of Color who initially attend these universities often leave prior to graduation. The findings of this study, based in Boulder, Colorado, indicate that predominantly white university communities (PWUC), that self-identify as liberal, may prove as racially tense for People of Color as more conservative communities. This study includes discussion of the following: - Whites in these communities often feel entitled to educate people of color about ethnic culture. - Whites in these communities celebrate the visual aspects of ethnic culture, but struggle with the cross-cultural communication challenges that accompany a history of racial inequity. - People of Color living in PWUC's communities cope by being silent, hyperethnocentric, and emotionally or physically retreating. - Youth of Color who grow up in these PWUC's often feel awkward with other People of Color. The results of this research further the discussion of diversity, racism and classism between various racial groups living in predominantly white liberal communities. It is useful for educators, scholars and sociologists interested in issues of diversity, intercultural, and intracultural communication.

Telling the Truth about History (9780393312867)

This text examines the problem of historical truth. Seeking the roots of contemporary historical study in the Enlightenment, the authors argue that a model of historical research, based on neutrality and objectivity, served historians well until World War II. After that post-modernism suggested history could not reveal the truth about the past and the rise of social history produced a great amount of statistics which effectively swamped the search for historical truth. Accepting that much of history teaching has been flawed, the authors nevertheless argue for an affirmation of historical knowledge against the doubts of the sceptics and the relativists, guiding the reader through the complex areas of political correctness and multiculturalism.
